Lao Donor Gives 5% of Month’s Earnings

At the beginning of our current crowdfunding campaign I got an email from Anfernee Chansamooth, co-founder, Kaboom Hub.  He offered to donate 5% of one month’s earnings to CleanBirth.org.

I first came across Cleanbirth.org through your campaign on
StartSomeGood.com. The campaign struck me because of the wonderful
work that you are doing to help mothers and infants in Laos. I have a personal connection to Laos because my family are from there.

In 2011 I visited my country of birth for the first time after migrating to Australia thirty-three years ago. I visited my late mother’s village and saw the house where she and her many siblings were born and raised. To be able to see what modest means our family came from, and to know that my parents did everything in their power to escape and create a better life for all of us – wow that was both an eye-opening and humbling experience.

I taught at a village school while I was there.  When I researched
statistics about education in Laos and was shocked to learn that many
kids do not make it past primary level education due to lack of quality teachers, funding, and resource challenges – especially in the villages. I consider myself very fortunate to have been given the opportunities that I’ve had in my life.

Sometimes mothers and infants aren’t so fortunate as my mother and I
were. So this is why I feel connected to Cleanbirth.org and the work
that you are doing in Laos.

Last year my business partner Poy and I launched Kaboom Hub. We work with businesses to increase their exposure and get more leads through online marketing. Each month we support a philanthropic organziation by donating 5% of our earnings.

It brings us great personal joy to see what Cleanbirth.org is doing and to be able to support such a worthwhile project.

Last weeks CleanBirth.org + World Moms Blog campaign kicked some serious butt: $685 raised from 23 donors! That’s birth supplies and training to keep 137 moms and 137 babies in Laos safe.

These donors would not have learned about us without the efforts of Jennifer Burden and her team of global moms! I am so grateful.

Why?  CleanBirth.org works in southern Laos, where maternal and infant mortality rates are among the highest in the world.

How? In partnership with a Lao non-profit, CleanBirth.org trains village nurses to use and distribute Clean Birth Kits (birthing supplies which prevent infection). Further, we fund nurses’ trips to remote villages to distribute the kits and conduct “Safe Birth Outreach,” a curriculum aimed at making birth safer.

For $5 we can provide a mother with supplies and education.

My Birth Story: Nikolai 9/2/05

nikolaiday1I got pregnant in Oxford, England. My pregnancy was easy. I was cared for by a wonderful Scottish midwife; never saw a doctor. I maybe had 2 blood draws and 1 ultrasound. I felt healthy and like what was happening was normal. My husband and I took a Mongan Method, Hypnobirthing Class http://www.hypnobirthing.com/.

At 30 weeks we moved to Berlin, Germany for my husband’s MBA internship. I explored Berlin’s neighborhoods, increasingly slowly, took a German class (world’s most pregnant language student) and saw a local doctor once to check-in.

At 37 weeks we returned to Oxford to learn that my baby was breech. At the hospital at 38 weeks, a doctor tried to right him via ECV to no avail. So, my midwife advised that we schedule a C-section for 39 weeks because “only 2 doctors at the hospital have experience delivering a breech.” I trusted her, so that was that.

On the big day, we hopped in one of those cool English cabs, and en route I decided that if the baby was a boy he wouldn’t be Dimitri but Nikolai. The girl name was as locked in as my breech baby: Nadya. (She came 2 years later)

A spinal block, epidural and I was under the lights. Tugging, my husband’s blue eyes, and a baby put right on my chest. Perfect. Mine. Nikolai.
