UN Global Newborn Health Conference

Yesterday was the opening session of the first Global Newborn Health Conference at the UN.  The four-day conference is a new effort to work towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals in the last few years before the deadline in 2015.

Representatives from 50 countries are participating to address the three major causes of newborn mortality: prematurity, birth asphyxia and infection. These three causes can be prevented with simple interventions such as low cost medicines, equipment, and health strategies.

It is hoped that as a result of the conference there will be stronger push to implementing interventions in countries that need it the most, in the run0-up to 2015.

 

Using GPS to Make Birth Safer

The Guardian reports that GPS technology is now being implemented in Nigeria to help reduce child and mother mortality in childbirth!

The data show the effects of distance from a clinic on mortality. Using the technology, organizations were able to know where clinics were present and where they were not. This technology can be used to build clinics in places that were overlooked.

Can GPS be utilized in other developing countries like Laos?

 

Cameras Needed

CallforcamerasThe project is moving and growing.  We are in the process of sending 1,000 kits to Laos.  Our July training of 16 nurses is scheduled for June 23-29.

The nurses have requested digital cameras to use when registering mothers, tracking the kit use and for capturing Safe Birth Outreach sessions.  This will enable us to better document the work being done.

I need a volunteer content writer

That’s the thought that’s been in my head for a month.

I feel badly that my blog has been so lackluster since the fundraising took over.  Each time, I delete my “Google Alerts” about Maternal Mortality, Infant Mortality and Clean Birth Kits, I cringe.  I still want my readers to know about these things…and I want this site to keep being relevant but the time just isn’t there.

Does anyone out there have 15-20 minutes a few times a week to write up an article on maternal/infant health and crosspost it on FB and Twitter?
